It is still unclear what exactly happened, but posts on China's popular twitter-like service, Weibo, from users in the area show photographs and video of large numbers of police in and around the factory -- many in riot gear -- blocking off throngs of people. Other photos show debris strewn around the Foxconn compound and in one case, an overturned guard tower. According to popular tech blog e...
Future Cities, a full-length documentary strand from WIRED Video, takes us inside the bustling Chinese city of Shenzhen. Subscribe to WIRED►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired We examine the unique manufacturing ecosystem that has emerged, gaining access to the world’s leading hardware-prototyping culture whilst challenging misconceptions from the west. The film looks at how the evolution of “Shanzhai” – or copycat manufacturing – has transformed traditional models of business, distribution and innovation, and asks what the rest of the world can learn from this so-called “Silicon Valley of hardware". Future Cities is part of a new flagship documentary strand from WIRED Video that explores the technologies, trends and ideas that are changing our world. Subscribe to the WIRED YouTube channel to...

I built a like-new(but really refurbished) iPhone 6S 16GB entirely from parts I bought in the public cell phone parts markets in Huaqiangbei. And it works! I've been fascinated by the cell phone parts markets in Shenzhen, China for a while. I'd walked through them a bunch of times, but I still didn't understand basic things, like how they were organized or who was buying all these parts and what they were doing with them. So when someone mentioned they wondered if you could build a working smartphone from parts in the markets, I jumped at the chance to really dive in and understand how everything works. Well, I sat on it for nine months, and then I dove in. More details at: https://strangeparts.com/how-i-made-my-own-iphone-in-china/ Facebook: http://facebook.com/strangepartscom Twit...

In this third episode of our Future Cities strand, we explore how attitudes in Shenzhen about patents and intellectual property differ to those in the West. Subscribe to WIRED►► http://po.st/SubscribeWired In particular, we look at how the evolution of “shanzhai” - or copycat manufacturing - has created an ecosystem that could transform traditional models of business, distribution and innovation. Although, technically, any knock-off goods can be called shanzhai, the word's meaning has recently shifted to refer to electronic goods, and episode three delves behind the scenes of this business culture. The final part of the series is out next Tuesday June 28, when we’ll be asking to what extent the practices in Shenzhen have the power to revolutionise our world. Subscribe to the WIRED YouT...

Yuanwang Digital Mall is the largest Smartphone Market in Shenzhen, Nicole Scott does a walk through of the multistory mad house with her iPhone 6. Visit her website at http://www.mobilegeeks.com/shenzhen-smartphone-market-walk-through-photos-video/ to check out the complete article with a few photos. This is one of the most interesting smartphone markets in HuaqianBei (the computer market street in Shenzhen) because it's the gateway for many blackmarket smarpthones to hit the streets in all parts of China. Danish firms Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Gottlieb Paludan Architects have won a competition to design the world's largest waste-to-energy power plant in China. Proposed for the mountainous region on the outskirts of Shenzhen, the waste-to-energy plant is expected to incinerate 5,000 tonnes of rubbish per day – approximately one third of the waste generated by the city's 20 million inhabitants each year. According to the architects, the facility will "utilise the most advanced technology in waste incineration and power generation". The huge circular building will boast a 66,000-square-metre roof, two thirds of which will be covered with photovoltaic panels, allowing the building to generate its own sustainable supply of energy. It will also feature a series of visitor facilitie...
Topsky is the only supplier of headmounted micro-display based devices that I have seen at Hong Kong tradeshows who may be able to provide a Google Glass like experience starting at $230 per unit for a 100-unit minimum order quantity. The only negative things about it is the Ingenic MIPS dual-core processor (instead of using Rockchip or Allwinner ARM solutions), and the software is "not yet" provided by Google, this doesn't run Google Glass UI, it doesn't run Android Wear UI, it runs Topsky's custom UI on top of Android, which looks good, but is not quite the same as having Google's support. What could happen though, is Google people watch this video and contact Topsky below, or maybe some hackers get it and improve it somehow. I look forward to try it out some more to see about the voice-...
